HIDDEN History!

I remember like it was yesterday.
Sitting at my Aunt Edna's house in Memphis,
listening to her stories of trials and tribulations
working as a sharecropper in Mississippi!

it's stories like this and millions of other
untold stories that never see the light of day
because those who control the media,
control our minds.

Thank God for those who came before us
to make our lives better, like these women,
and the women behind the scenes
who helped Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
do the work he did to help us all
be a better society.

Re-Entry Meeting the Needs of Families of the Incarcerated

Visitation: If a friend, family member, or other loved one is currently incarcerated at an Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) facility, please use the links below to learn more about IDOC and federal visitation policies.

If you are a family member or friend of a person incarcerated in a state prison, your life has changed in many ways. Some call this “doing time outside". Whatever you may call it, this time can be painful and difficult for you. You may have lost the family who cared for your children. Relatives and friends may act differently, while others may act as if you are the criminal.Lutheran Social Services of Illinois has created a Guide for Families of the Arrested and Incarcerated and the Families Deal with Prison in Illinois Guide. Also included is a Prison Transit Services document, which provides visitors with information about transportation to and from IDOC facilities.

If you are a parent that has been arrested you do not need to lose all of your rights regarding your children. Chicago Legal Advocacy for Incarcerated Mothers (Claim) has just released a new booklet: When a Parent is Arrested: Caring for the Children: A guide to Legal Options and Resources

Retired Chicago Police Officer Pat Hill
(The Real Police)

"To all of you in Chicago who plan to take the police exam on the 31st of January and to those of you who have some influnce over those who are taking it, please allow me to give you some advice. If you are afraid to talk to people in a humane way, don't take the test. If you are afraid to make arrests instead of shooting folks, don't take the test. Learn the General Orders and use them effectively. And most of all, if you don't love your people, please don't take the test. When you get on the job, if you are a good officer, we have an obligation to support you. All I can say, from experience, the community supported me as well as the good officers. And I am still reciprocating."

-- Retired Chicago Police Officer Pat Hill

Click Here to get a free organizing guide and join the ranks of those mentoring across America in the 2017 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mentor Weekend Program.
"With violence in cities escalating and failure in schools increasing, officials have now realized that they cannot be successful developing youth without an intentional and focused mentoring effort as part of a comprehensive plan to reduce youth violence and improve communities.

The societal, peer and negative media forces competing for our children's time and energies are just too strong and unrelenting for youth to overcome without a structured, consistent, positive mentoring program to support them.

It is unfortunate that street gangs "run better mentor programs" than most churches and schools, and that most drug dealers are better mentors than church members and community members.  Until this changes, we have almost no hope!"

Phillip Jackson
Chairman of the Board
The Black Star Project

On the 2017 MLK Mentor Weekend:
  • Friday - Show a film or documentary to youth about their history and/or their service to community and country.
  • Saturday - Complete a community service project with children, the homeless, ex-felons, new immigrants or senior citizens.
  • Sunday - Take A Young Person to Worship at a mosque, synagogue, temple, church or to a quiet place.
  • Monday - A Day of Mentoring as you choose with food, fun, speakers and information.
