Global Leaders Program: 2016 Application now LIVE!
Friends of the Illinois Tech Global Leaders Program,
We're excited to announce that the Global Leaders Program Application for 2016 is LIVE and accepting applications. We accept applications from students currently in their sophomore year of high school. If you know students who are anticipated to graduate in 2018, we would appreciate you sharing this information with them.
Our program, previously known as the IIT Boeing Scholars Academy, supports highly-motivated students as they gain the skills, experience, and knowledge necessary to get to and through highly selective colleges and universities. We work to empower students to lead and serve through STEM. To learn more about our approach and the benefits offered by our program, please visit us at globalleaders.iit.edu.
We are conducting a series of regional info sessions to introduce students to our program. This year, we're partnering with some generous Chicago high schools to bring our info sessions to more neighborhoods. Students and families from ALL schools are welcome to attend any info session. There is no need to attend more than one info session, so students and families can choose the location and date most convenient for them. Please share these opportunities with students and families!  A schedule of our info sessions is available here. Register online here: bit.ly/GLPinfoRSVP2016.
Thanks again for spreading the word about our program. Please feel free to reach out to Luke with specific questions or to identify students you think are especially apt for the program. We appreciate your partnership!

Job Shadow Days with GLP are structured experiences that provide our Scholars with the opportunity to explore different career paths and identify possible career interests. A small group of Scholars would visit your work site for around three hours (2 hours of work plus lunch). During this time, you might:
  • Give Scholars a general introduction to your company/organization
  • Take students on a tour of your facilities
  • Discuss who you are, what you do, and your path to get where you are
  • Ask students about their experiences and interests
  • Allow students to observe or assist you with your work (this could be as simple as sitting in on a meeting or assisting with a regular task you complete)
  • Arrange for coworkers to join you and the visiting Scholars for lunch
These opportunities will coincide with school holidays in February or CPS' Spring Break in April. You can read more about this opportunity here. Interested organizations, contact Charlie (clindqui@iit.edu) directly.

PUT UP or SHUT UP Time on Voter Registration, Voter Education and Turnout for March Primary
Posted by Mark S. Allen

THE ILLINOIS VOTER RESTORATION CIVIC EDUCATION PROJECT

connecting and reconnecting voters to the ongoing electoral processes
MARK S ALLEN, Lead Organizer

to grassroots voter registration, voter education and voter turnout
HEAR MY VOICE !!
IT'S "PUT UP" OR "SHUT UP" TIME ON VOTER REGISTRATION, VOTER EDUCATION AND TURNOUT FOR THE UPCOMING MARCH ELECTIONS!!!
Voter Registration, Education and TURNOUT is KEY for March Primary!!

THIS JUST IN -- CRAINS just did a feature story today on The States Attorneys Race with the OBSERVATION that while the Black community and its leaders have been doing major PR events against Alvarez that it has YET to translate into any kind of major voter registration drive for the March election so our need for coming together lifting up voter registration is KEY, for its clear now from The CRAINS article that the Black community is being watched now for the SUBSTANCE of the work that has to follow all the PR events with regard to the March elections!! AND its the REAL reason that that Alvarez has stated repeatedly that she wont resign and will take her chances at the polls, especially if SHE TOO is seeing that the Black communities voter registration ACTIONS are not backing up all the hype of the Marches etc against her! or others facing voters on election day!! And there is the major race for Clerk Of The Circuit Court were you have Incumbent Dorothy Brown and whether she can survive the upcoming election that has her trying to survive against the challenge of 8th Ward Alderman Michelle Harris and another Clerk candidate in March!!
The CRAINS article is KEY that the major media is WATCHING if the Black community is just TALKING LOUD and SAYING NOTHING
HEAR MY VOICE !! IT'S "VOTER REGISTRATION ASSIGNMENT & REPORTING TIME.
Everybody can be calling the local high school in their area and ones that they have relationships with that you would like to schedule Deputy Registrars at their school on FRIDAY JANUARY 15th as a High School Voter Registration Day in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday AND in recognition of The Legislature Passing and the Governor signing the new law the re-institutes CIVICS in the Public Schools. And what better way for eligible students to become educated in civics than to become a registered voter.  LETS GET TO WORK!!  We especially want to engage our student leaders across the city to show that the 18-35 age group will not be the lowest in voter registration and voter turnout in March elections."

Moral Bankruptcy Of Chicago's Elites

As the city approaches financial bankruptcy, Chicago's elite's line-their-pockets with taxpayer money.
There is real pain in Chicago. In the last four years, 10,000 shootings have left the city scarred. Nearly 21,000 students are trapped in failing schools. Homeowners face rising property taxes - monthly property tax payments now rival mortgage payments. One million residents have fled the city since 1950 for prosperity elsewhere.
Rumors of financial insolvency are not exaggerated. There is a staggering $19,000 public pension liability per each city resident.
As a mayoral candidate in 2010-11, Rahm Emanuel gave regular people hope with his repeated assertion that he would "stop pay-to-play in City Hall" and "end the historical culture of corruption." Emanuel was right. Public sector corruption was forestalling private sector production. Ending "pay to play" seemed like the only way back for the city.
In the months following his election, Emanuel seemed to execute on his promise by signing an executive order preventing city contractors from giving campaign cash to the mayor's funds. It was a nice soundbite, but the measure was weakly designed. It lacked an enforcement mechanism and was riddled with loopholes.
Last week, our organization American Transparency - with the data at OpenTheBooks.com - fact checked Emanuel's ethics policy for the John Stossel Special, Chicago Corruption: Is Pay-to-Play in Chicago Still Legal? Click here to watch segment

Discover The Music Vault:

Discover The Music Vault: A Massive YouTube Archive of 22,000 Live Concert Videos

Last summer, we highlighted an almost unbelievably rich resource for music fans: the Music Vault, a Youtube archive of 22,000 live concert videos from a range of artists, spanning about four decades into the present. In a time of soaring ticket prices, the Music Vault allows us to catch a show at home for free, and to see bands we missed in their heyday perform on stages around the world. Last summer, I wrote, "enjoy revisiting the glory days and rest assured, they aren't going away anytime soon." But I spoke too soon, as many Music Vault videos (there were only 13,000 then) began disappearing, along with the nostalgia and hip currency they offered.
